Create a small space for a big memory.
On October 17, from 6–8 PM, join local artist and therapist Maria Villarreal for a family-friendly introduction to Día de los Muertos and its traditions of remembrance, connection, and continuity. Together, we’ll explore nichos—small three-dimensional display spaces, rooted in Mexican folk and devotional art traditions,that can hold meaningful objects, images, and symbols.
Families, chosen families, and small groups will work together to create one miniature nicho inspired by someone, something, or a memory they want to honor. You might create a nicho for a loved one, ancestor, pet, family tradition, favorite place, meaningful food, hobby, or something else you want to remember and carry forward. Photographs are welcome but not required.
Along the way, we’ll talk about some of the symbols, materials, and traditions associated with Día de los Muertos, while making space for families to bring their own experiences and interpretations to the project.
After the workshop, participants will have the option to stay for an informal gathering with food, conversation, and sharing. We’ll take time to look at each other’s creations and reflect on the many ways food, objects, nature, and stories can hold memory.
